Vision Part 3 – Why are We Going There?

This is the third of my seven part blog series on our Vision.

In the first blog I made the case for who we are as a community of faith and worship.

In the second part of this series I laid out the rationale for where we are going – into our local mission field.

In this third part I think it is important for us to all have an understanding of why.  A few of you may need no explanation but with the advent of Christmerica (a distorted hermeneutic or world view of Christianity in American culture) it is necessary to clarify.

Christmerica has supplanted the old religion of serving God and your neighbor with “what is in it for me?”  With the help of influential preachers and teachers we have molded the message from “a call to complete discipleship” to “it’s all about me” theology where “God is my heavenly benefactor.”  Our reasons for church, worship and small group are:

1)  Check mark so God doesn’t punish me

2)  If I attend faithfully, God will bless me with prosperity

3)  It helps me be a good person

4)  If the pastor/teacher does his job right, I will be spiritually fed for the week

5)  It is my fueling station for the soul so I can make it through the next week

6)  I don’t need God unless something bad happens – then he better show up and deliver!

So with all of the distortion lets cut through the clutter and noise to discover why we are going into our local community – our mission field.

Two basic reasons:  first, because Jesus said “GO!”  The risen Son of God gave his disciples a command and that was to go.  It wasn’t optional; his command was imperative.  It wasn’t debatable; it was decisive.  It wasn’t time bound; it is a timeless command.  If we are a modern disciple of Jesus Christ then we should be heeding the command to go.  The gospel isn’t about us and our needs – it is the good news to be shared with others!  It is about looking outside first and inside second.

Second, we bring with us the life changing message of Jesus Christ.  God who created us came to dwell with us.  In the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ God has redeemed us so that we can go from death to new life.  And through the power of the Holy Spirit we are sustained in this life for the sake of ministry as we glorify God through serving our neighbor.

We are going into our mission field to “foster new and growing relationships with God and others” as an act of obedience to Jesus and to take his gospel to all people.

That is about as succinct as I can put it!  That is why we are going!

Join me on this journey.
