Vision Part 5 – What Can I Do?

The question that everyone wants to know the answer to in any organization is – “How do I fit in?”  It is a multi-layered question from socially, emotionally, spiritually, and even talents.  We join groups to be active participants mind, soul, and body.  The community of faith is the same – we join to be active participants in something!  So inevitably we ask “what can I do?”

Let’s start the conversation this way.  The teaching of the Christian tradition tells us that all persons who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior receive the gift of the Holy Spirit – God’s presence in the depths of our souls communicating love, grace, and forgiveness.  We also profess that God through the Spirit empowers us with unique gifts of the Spirit.  Here is a list of some of the spiritual gifts that are named in Romans 12, I Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4 and other passages in the New Testament:  exhortation, giving, leadership, mercy, prophecy, service, teaching, hospitality, evangelism, pastor, administration, apostle, discernment, faith, healing, helping, knowledge, and wisdom.

We don’t have time for an in depth definition of each of these but if you do not know what your spiritual gift is there are many on-line spiritual gifts inventories available that are free.  Here are a couple:

We also have a workbook format at the office and Tricia DeCamp would be excited to help you go through this process.  If you do it on your own or choose to use a workbook, please let Tricia know your results.  Why you might ask?

Well that is really how we answer the question “what can I do?”  Our goal is to match your spiritual gift with an area of service and ministry.  We understand that if God has gifted you for a particular area of ministry then you will find your greatest blessing and spiritual fulfilment serving in that area.

Another way of looking at it is to think of a puzzle.  In a 100, 250 or 500 piece puzzle, no two pieces are exactly the same.  Every piece is unique in its shape and will only fit in one place – the place that it was created for.  We believe that is true in the church – each of us has a unique place to fill that will complete the picture of North Star Church.  No one can fill your spot in the picture – only you can!  The challenge is to find out exactly where you fit.  AND sitting on the sideline is not an option – the puzzle doesn’t make sense with pieces still on the sidelines or missing.  I think you get the picture!

So what can you do?  First discover what your spiritual gift is.  Second make sure that Tricia DeCamp knows what they are.  Third look for every  opportunity to express your gifts both inside the church and out in the world.  Don’t be a piece of the puzzle that is missing or sitting on the sides!  Get in the picture and fill your place!

Blessings for the journey!

Q:  Do you know what your spiritual gift(s) are?  Are you using them in God’s service?
